Methionine is a sulphur-containing protein amino acid that is minimally soluble in water providing bio-available sulphur, vital for healthy hoof horn. It is the most important amino acid for hoof growth and is the foundation for collagen production.
Dietary supplements high in methionine, but not balanced for zinc and copper, can cause deficiencies and poor horn. In excess, methionine can block the absorption of zinc, copper and iron.
Biotin is Vitamin H, a member of the B Complex vitamins. Like all B-vitamins, biotin is water soluble. That means it is not stored in body fats. Since it cannot be stored, it must be present in the daily diet. Biotin is the second-most important nutrient in hoof growth and repair. It helps alleviate eczema and dermatitis through utilization of proteins. Biotin acts as a co-factor in many of the body's enzymatic reactions. It is essential in your horse's body for the production of fatty acids, glycogen production and for the production of proteins. Biotin deficiencies cause skin lesions, sparse hair growth, dry, scaly skin, and brittle, cracking hooves. Hoof deformities such as dishing and low heels have also been associated with biotin deficiencies.
Methyl-Sulfonyl-Methane (MSM) is an organic compound derived from DMSO (topical anti-inflammatory). It is an excellent dietary source of Sulphur, an element that is important in the formation of connective tissue and is credited with enhancing blood circulation and reducing inflammation and epiphysitis.
Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) helps heal wounds; contributes to the formation of cells, tissues, teeth, hooves, tendons and bones; and helps to boosts the immune system.
Zinc a mineral component of tissues like skin and hoof horn, essential to support healthy keratin formation within the hoof wall. Zinc helps to improve hoof integrity through wound healing, epithelium maintenance, and keratin synthesis and maturation. Healthy keratin formation prevents the hoof wall becoming brittle or soft. Keratin is also a major component of healthy skin.
Iodine helps to control metabolism and is recommended for horses with weak hooves or hoof wall problems.
Copper can help increase hoof hardness. Horses deficient in copper may be more susceptible to heel cracks, white line disease, and sole abscesses.
Choline helps eliminate poisons from the system through the liver and helps nerve responses to aid the healing.
